Abstract / Summary

The study examines traditional rural architecture in Jabal al-Zawiya in northwestern Syria and its importance in achieving environmental, social, and economic sustainability in light of the changes imposed by war, displacement, and natural disasters. It adopts the VERSUS framework to assess the extent to which this architecture aligns with sustainability principles. The results show that the environmental dimension is the most prominent and widely applied, followed by the economic dimension and then the social dimension, with noticeable gaps that require innovative solutions to ensure the continuity of this architectural pattern.

The study concludes that traditional architecture constitutes a foundation upon which contemporary rural architecture can be developed—one that respects local identity while meeting sustainability requirements. It recommends strengthening effective environmental strategies, reviving traditional crafts, and adopting earthquake-resistant techniques suited to the local environment, alongside establishing regulations and plans for the restoration and protection of historical buildings. It also emphasizes the need to integrate these solutions into rural development plans to reduce pressure on cities and achieve balanced development.
